JPG to WebP

Convert a JPEG photograph to WebP in the browser and download the WebP file.

JPG to WebP workspace

How to use it

Choose a .jpg or .jpeg file and Create file. Download saves a WebP at the same pixel size. Other formats are refused so a PNG with transparency is not silently flattened here.

Example

A JPEG has no alpha channel, so the WebP does not gain transparency.

Input

photo.jpg

Result

photo.webp

How it works

The JPEG is decoded by the browser and encoded as WebP at quality 0.92. If the browser cannot produce a WebP blob, the status says so instead of saving a file with the wrong type. The output type is image/webp.

Common errors

  • A PNG was rejected Use Image Compressor or Image Resizer for PNG. This page accepts JPEG only.
  • The browser could not encode WebP Update the browser or use a browser that can encode WebP. No file is offered in that case.
  • The file was named .jpg but is not a JPEG The browser must be able to decode it as an image. A renamed PDF will fail.

Limitations

The conversion does not change the pixel dimensions and does not add an ICC profile workflow. Files over 15 MB or 8000 pixels on a side are refused. Nothing is uploaded.

Privacy

The file stays in your browser. PepsTools does not upload it, store it, or send it to another service. Clear the tool or leave the page to drop it from memory.

Questions

Does the WebP become transparent?

No. JPEG has no transparency to carry over, and this conversion does not invent an alpha channel.
