Image Compressor

Re-encode a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF at a quality you choose, and say so only when the file gets smaller.

Image Compressor workspace

JPEG output paints transparent pixels on white. A result that is not smaller is not described as compressed.

How to use it

Choose an image and a quality from 10 to 100. Pick JPEG or WebP output, then Create file. The status compares the original size with the new size. Download saves the result either way.

Example

If the new file is larger, the status says it is not a compressed copy. You can still download it, but it is not described as compressed.

Input

A 1.2 MB photo at quality 80

Result

A JPEG or WebP whose byte size is lower than the original, with both sizes shown.

How it works

The image is drawn to a canvas and encoded by the browser. JPEG output fills transparent pixels with white before encoding, because JPEG has no alpha channel. Quality is the encoder quality argument, not a target file size. A result that is not smaller is reported as not compressed.

Common errors

  • The file grew Quality was high, or the original was already compressed. Lower the quality or switch output format. The page will not call the larger file compressed.
  • PNG transparency disappeared in a JPEG JPEG cannot store transparency. Choose WebP output to keep an alpha channel when the browser can encode it.
  • The browser refused WebP That browser cannot encode WebP. Choose JPEG.

Limitations

GIF animation is flattened to the first frame the browser decodes. Images larger than 15 MB, or longer than 8000 pixels on a side, are refused. The tool does not use a server-side encoder.

Privacy

The file stays in your browser. PepsTools does not upload it, store it, or send it to another service. Clear the tool or leave the page to drop it from memory.

Questions

Will you call every export compressed?

No. The word compressed is used only when the new file has fewer bytes than the original.
